Drug Highlights

Generic Name: Tramadol

Brand Name: Ultram, Ultram ER, ConZip, Ryzolt

Classified as: Opioid analgesic

What is Tramadol, and what are the primary uses of it?

Tramadol is a generic version of the brand name Ultram. It is an opioid analgesic for treating moderate to severe pain. The onset of pain relief usually begins within an hour for the immediate-release formulations. Tramadol is available both as a single-ingredient product and in combination with acetaminophen.

Tramadol is a medication that binds the opioid receptors on neurons. It is also an SNRI (serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor).

Uses

Tramadol is primarily useful in treating both acute and chronic mild to severe pain. The analgesic effects take about 60 minutes to start an action and 2-4 hours to reach the peak concentration for immediate-release formulation. Tramadol has one-tenth potency of morphine on a dose-by-dose basis and almost equally potent to codeine and pethidine.

For moderate pain, Tramadol is equally effective as morphine. The effects of immediate-release Tramadol usually last for six hours after administration.
